Regal Review: King Juan Carlos' Abdication & King Felipe's Accession
Today marks the 6th anniversary of King Juan Carlos’ abdication and King Felipe’s accession to the Spanish throne. Today’s Regal Review post thus takes a look back on the new Queen’s fashion for this historic event.
On June 18th, 2014, King Juan Carlos officially abdicated during a ceremony at the Royal Palace.
Queen Letizia wore a black and white Felipe Varela dress with her Magrit nude pumps and a black suede clutch.
On June 19th, 2014, King Felipe officially ascended to the Spanish throne. A ceremony first took place at La Zarzuela Palace during which King Juan Carlos awarded King Felipe his military sash.
Afterward, a ceremony took place at the Parliament where King Felipe was officially sworn in.
Following the ceremony, the new King and Queen took part in a procession in the streets of Madrid before returning to the Royal Palace.
They were joined by their two daughters and the former King and Queen during a balcony appearance to greet the crowd waiting for them.
To end the day, King Felipe and Queen Letizia hosted a reception and lunch with 2000 guests.
Queen Letizia wore a white dress and a white embellished coat by Felipe Varela with a nude suede Felipe Varela clutch, bespoke Magrit pumps and her Chanel earrings.
