Crown Princess Victoria attends opening of the Sami Parliament
Today, Crown Princess Victoria attended the opening of the Sami Parliament in Lycksele in Norrland. The Sami Parliament works for the Sami culture in Sweden. The elected parliament consists of 31 members who meet in plenary sessions three times a year.
During the ceremony, the Chairman of the Sámediggi's Board, Håkan Jonsson, gave a speech, followed by the Speaker Andreas Norlén, Minister of Culture Amanda Lind and Archbishop Antje Jackelén giving their greetings to the Sámediggi. After lunch, the Crown Princess, the Prime Minister, and the Governor had the opportunity to talk to the seven parties who told about their policies and their most important issues.
In the afternoon, Crown Princess Victoria visited the cemetery at Gammplatsen in Lycksele. They learned more about the cemetery itself and when, 70 years ago, Sami remains were excavated in connection with an archaeological excavation and placed in museums. In August 2019, the remains were returned to their original resting place in the cemetery.
Crown Princess Victoria concluded her day with a visit to the Forest Museum where she toured the Sami department.
Crown Princess Victoria wore the traditional Sami costume that was sewn for her before her attendance the opening of the Sami Parliament in 2009 with her Epoch watch and her usual stack of bracelets.
