The monument acknowledges and celebrates the contribution of the Windrush Generation to British history. The Windrush Generation refers to workers who were brought to the UK between 1948 and 1971 from Caribbean countries to help fill post-war UK labor shortages.

In his speech, the Duke of Cambridge said: "Diversity is what makes us strong, and it is what reflects the modern, outward-looking values that are so important to our country. I want to say a profound thank you to every member of that generation, and the generations that have followed. And I want you to know that you can count on mine and Catherine's continued support in helping us achieve a future they would be proud of."

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also visited ELEVATE which is a “youth program led by the London Borough of Lambeth which aims to open up the creative and cultural sector to every young person in the borough.”
