King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia commemorate 30th anniversary of the sinking of M/S Estonia

On Saturday, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia attended a memorial ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the sinking of M/S Estonia. The ceremony took place at the Estonia monument in Stockholm. The passenger ferry M/S Estonia sank on its journey between Tallinn and Stockholm on September 28, 1994. It was the largest civilian ship disaster in Europe after World War II. 852 people died, of which 501 were from Sweden.

In his speech, King Carl Gustaf said: “It is in moments like this that we are reminded of how important it is to gather, find comfort in each other and preserve the memories. At the monument we can meet and pass on the stories of those we miss. Because as long as our loved ones remain in our thoughts, they always remain with us.” King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia also laid a wreath at the monument.
