Mary Donaldson during her engagement interview

We are taking a look back at the dress the then Mary Donaldson wore during her engagement interview on October 8, 2003.

It was on that day that their engagement became official after Queen Margrethe gave her consent at the State Council meeting. The intent to marry had been previously announced on September 24.

The 3/4 length sleeved dress she chose for the occasion was by Kenth Fredin, who is a Danish designer. The dress was worn under a coat, also by Kenth, during the day's events before their appearance before the media in the Palace. She wore her brown hair pulled half up and out of her face. She also wore simple diamond stud earrings for the day. She finished off the look with a pair of Valentino heels.

Crown Prince Frederik presented Australian-born Mary with an engagement ring mimicking the Danish flag. It has two emerald-cut ruby baguettes around an emerald-cut diamond.

Interviews with the happy couple were conducted by both Danish and Australian media after they had appeared on the balcony to the waiting public.

Mary, who was not yet fluent in Danish, did attempt to answer some Danish reporters in their language but most of the interview was conducted in her native English.

Frederik called the feelings of the announcement "a huge happiness."
