Sonja Haraldsen was born to commoner parents in Oslo on July 4, 1937. She graduated from the University of Oslo with a degree in French, English and Art History. She met then-Crown Prince Harald in 1959. They weren't given permission to marry for nine years due to her commoner background, but the Crown Prince vowed to give up the throne for her if he was not permitted to marry her.
They wed on August 29, 1968, in Oslo Cathedral. Together, they have two children: Princess Märtha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon. They also have six grandchildren: Maud, Leah, and Emma Behn from Märtha Louise's marriage to Ari Behn; Marius Borg Høiby - the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit); Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus through Haakon and Mette-Marit.
