The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge name the The RSS Sir David Attenborough
Today, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are in Birkenhead to attend the naming ceremony of the UK’s new polar research ship, the RRS Sir David Attenborough.
Before the naming ceremony, the Duke and Duchess had the opportunity to tour the ship which is owned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The ship will enable world-leading research to be carried out in Antarctica and the Arctic over the next 25 to 30 years.
During their visit, William and Kate met a team of engineers as well as scientists who demonstrated the state-of-the-art equipment on the ship. They also met schoolchildren involved in BAS’s ‘Polar Explorer’ program, which encourages and supports schools to enrich their teaching of STEM subjects by educating pupils about polar science and the ship’s future expeditions.
During the naming ceremony, Sir David Attenborough and the Duke of Cambridge made a speech and the Duchess - as the sponsor of the ship- formally named it.
Kate wore her Alexander McQueen cornflower blue coat that she debuted in 2014 wth her Emmy London ‘Josie’ block heel pumps and a new clutch by Asprey London. She also wore her Mappin & Webb earrings.
