Crown Princess Mary visits Burkina Faso
This week, Crown Princess Mary spent two days in Burkina Faso with the Minister for Development Aid Flemming Møller Mortensen. The trip focused on girls' and women's health and rights in a region characterized by poverty, unrest, and climate change.
On Thursday, Crown Princess Mary first visited the public health center “Centre de Santé et Promotion Sociale”. Public health centers are the primary access to health care for 80-90% of the population of Burkina Faso.
During her visit, Crown Princess Mary met with employees of the center to learn about their work in providing sexual and reproductive health services to girls and women and support to victims of gender-based violence.
On Friday, Crown Princess Mary started her day with an official meeting with the President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.
The meeting focused on the relationship between the two countries.
Afterward, Crown Princess Mary and the Minister for Development Aid visited a local girls' club on the outskirts of Ouagadougou where they heard stories of young girls who have experienced child marriage, violence, or circumcision on their own. The club gives these girls the opportunity to discuss their experiences - which are often still considered taboo - in a confidential manner. They also receive psychological support and legal assistance.
Crown Princess Mary also met representatives of the Danish Embassy in Burkina Faso’s youth panel for lunch. The youth panel gives input for the implementation of the strategic framework for Denmark's involvement in the country.
In the afternoon, Crown Princess Mary visited the ABBEF Center which offers young people services and counseling related to contraception, HIV / AIDS, and more general counseling on sexual and reproductive health and rights.
