Dutch Royal Family celebrates Koningsdag 2022 in Maastricht
Today, King Willem-Alexander celebrated his 55th birthday! Koningsdag is usually celebrated in a Dutch city and this year it was in Maastricht.
The day of celebration started at Sint Servaasbrug where the Royal Family was welcome by the Mayor and the Governor.
The family then began their tour of the city with the 'Maastricht life' route which depicts the spirit of Maastricht: agile, flexible, sometimes untouchable, but always optimistic.
Then, they continued with the 'Limburg life' route which presented pictures of life in the Limburg provinces and in its fifteen municipalities.
The tour then brought the Royal Family to the 'European life' where King Willem-Alexander and Princess Catharina-Amalia minted the first two commemorative coins of the Maastricht Treaty.
The next route was 'Student Life' which featured a performance with music and dance on the Graanmarkt.
The royal family competed against each other in a quiz about the local language, Mestreechs.
The family then continued to ‘Burgundian Life’ where they helped prepare local dishes.
The tour ended with 'Cultural life' where they learned more about the many carnival associations in Maastricht. Dutch violinist André Rieu also performed.
The day ended with a performance by Rowwen Hèze at the Vrijthof.
In his speech, King Willem-Alexander said: “What you have shown is a Maastricht of bridges. Bridges between the past and the future, between residents and newcomers, between Europe and the Netherlands. Live Mestreech, Maastricht lives! Thank you!”
