Dutch Royal Family celebrates Koningsdag 2026 in Dokkum

On Monday, King Willem-Alexander celebrated his 59th birthday! Koningsdag is usually celebrated in a Dutch city and this year it was in Dokkum.

The Royal Family was greeted upon their arrival in Dokkum with a performance of the Frisian anthem by singer Elkse DeWall.

The Royal Family then took part in several sports activities such as Frisian handball, fierljeppen, sailing, and dance.

Afterward, they visited the Innovation Square where they joined craftsmen and students from Dokkum who were building a special work of art together with visual artist Hans Jouta.

They also joined inhabitants from the region in a quiz about the Frisian region. Princess Catharina-Amalia’s team won the quiz!

The Royal Family then joined ice skaters from the province on the ice as Dokkum is part of the Eleven Cities Tour, a long-distance tour skating event on natural ice going through all eleven historical cities of the province. King Willem-Alexander took part in the event in 1986.

The day of celebration ended at De Helling where King Willem-Alexander made a speech to thank the crowds.
