Queen Letizia's visit to New York City - Day 2
On Wednesday, Queen Letizia spent her second day in New York City as she attended events ahead of World Cancer Research Day on September 24th.
Queen Letizia first held a meeting with Spanish researchers in the fight against cancer at the headquarters of the Cervantes Institute in New York. Queen Letizia is the Honorary President of the Spanish Association Against Cancer and its Scientific Foundation.
Afterward, Queen Letizia met with the First Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden, at the Cancer Research Center of Columbia University.
Queen Letizia and the First Lady then attended the "Support Research: to prevent cancer and catch it early" event as part of World Cancer Research Day.
In her speech in English, which you can watch in full below, Queen Letizia said: “Prevention, early diagnosis, and equity. This is the triple perspective that places people at the very center of everything and that permeates the ecosystem we are part of […] Susan Sontag, the great New Yorker -and Prince of Asturias Award in Literature- in her still valid book “Illness as Metaphor” recommended to avoid romanticizing, using metaphors or warlike language when talking about cancer. I believe we are only gradually beginning to overcome what she denounced.”
Queen Letizia wore a new Ralph Lauren dress with her Magrit pumps and a new Carolina Herrera bag (with thanks to Nuria). She also wore gold hoop earrings and her Karen Hallam ring.
