The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attend engagements in Leeds
On Friday, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attended several engagements in Leeds.
They first attended the Headingley Stadium where they attended the Community Sport and Recreation Awards. The Duke of Edinburgh is President of the Sports and Recreation Alliance. During the ceremony, the Duchess of Edinburgh made a speech in honor of her husband who is turning 60 this weekend. She said: “Like my father-in-law, my husband never seeks compliments for himself. So when acknowledgment has come his way it has always been a total surprise to him, which is why I am grateful for this chance to, for once, be able to publicly celebrate and compliment him. He was so happy and humbled when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth made him a Knight of The Garter in 2006 and was equally delighted and moved the day His Majesty The King - who we are both incredibly proud to support - made him Duke of Edinburgh. Both he deserves in equal measure and I am so proud of the man he is. He is the best of fathers, the most loving of husbands and still is my best friend.”
To mark the International Women’s Day, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh met Leeds Rhinos female players and girls doing Rugby League drills. They also met two pioneers of women’s rugby league, Julia Lee, the UK’s first female rugby league referee, and Lisa McIntosh, a former Great Britain rugby league captain who was the first woman of colour to skipper a British sports team.
In the evening, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attended the Northern Ballet opening night of 'Romeo and Juliet'.
The Duchess of Edinburgh first wore a Max Mara suit with her Frame top, navy ankle boots, and her Sophie Habsburg bag. She paired the outfit with her Cassandra Goad necklace and her Felt bracelet.
In the evening, the Duchess of Edinburgh wore her Sportmax coat with an Erdem outfit, black pumps, and a Sophie Habsburg clutch.
