Grand Duke Henri's Abdication & Grand Duke Guillaume's Accession to the Throne
On Friday, Grand Duke Henri officially abdicated after 25 years on the throne and his son, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, became the new Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa first officially welcomed King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima, Princess Catharina-Amalia, King Philippe, Queen Mathilde, and Princess Elisabeth at the Grand Ducal Palace.
Afterward, a ceremony took place inside the Grand Ducal Palace during which Grand Duke Henri officially abdicated.
Prince Félix, Princess Claire, Prince Louis, Princess Alexandra, Nicolas Bagory, and Prince Sébastien were in attendance, alongside Grand Duke Henri’s siblings.
The Grand Ducal Family and their guests then walked to the Chamber of Deputies, where Grand Duke Guillaume’s official swearing-in ceremony took place. Prince Charles, the new heir to the throne, was also in attendance.
The new Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie then appeared with their family and their guests on the balcony of the Grand Ducal Palace.
In the afternoon, Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie attended an official ceremony at the town hall with the Grand Ducal Family and the foreign dignitaries in attendance.
Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie then attended a reception at the Cercle Cité, where they greeted representatives of Luxembourg and European institutions, ambassadors accredited to Luxembourg, as well as representatives of civil society and the economic world.
Grand Duchess Stéphanie first wore an Elie Saab cape gown with her Chaumet ring.
Grand Duchess Stéphanie then wore her Natan white dress with nude pumps and a LK Bennett clutch. She also wore her Chaumet ring.
Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore a Natan Couture dress, which she first paired with Prada nude pumps and a nude clutch. Later in the day, she changed into another pair of Prada pumps and a Sophie Habsburg clutch.
Princess Claire wore her Sézane white suit with Jimmy Choo pumps. She also wore Grand Duchess Maria Teresa’s Lucia Odescalchi earrings.
Princess Alexandra wore a white coat with a Tiffany Rose dress.
Queen Maxima wore her Claes Iversen cape with a Claes Iversen dress, her Gianvito Rossi pumps, and a Bottega Veneta clutch. She also wore her Patek Philippe watch.
Princess Catharina-Amalia wore her mother’s Valentino cape with an Alex Perry dress and Gianvito Rossi pumps.
Queen Mathilde wore a Christian Dior dress with her Christian Dior pumps and her Christian Dior bag. She also wore her Rolex watch.
Princess Elisabeth wore a Natan Couture dress with her Jimmy Choo pumps and her mother’s earrings.
