Queen Mathilde attends UN General Assembly - Day 2

On Monday, Queen Mathilde spent her second day in New York City as she attends the UN General Assembly in her role as an advocate for the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

She first attended a high-level meeting hosted by UN Women to mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration on women’s rights. In her speech, Queen Mathilde said: “While progress has been made, we must acknowledge that no country has achieved gender equality. On the contrary, we are witnessing alarming regressions on equality issues and multiple crises affecting the rights of women and girls. There is a clear risk that in these troubled times, the promotion of equality for all will be sidelined, or even deliberately suppressed.”

Afterwards, Queen Mathilde attended a high-level meeting on the Sustainable Development Goals. In her speech, she said: “ The SDGs we are fighting for are essential to improve the life of millions of human beings across the world. I can bear witness, especially for the sectors I focus on. Quality, inclusive, egalitarian education, the reduction of poverty, the promotion of women’s and girls’s rights, mental health, and the impact of climate change. All those experiences have moved me and motivate me to lend my voice to all those who remain unheard.”

Queen Mathilde also met with Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, the Special Representative on Violence against Children, Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, and the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

In the evening, Queen Mathilde attended the Theirworld Annual High-level Global Education Dinner. The dinner focused on collective strategies and entrepreneurial endeavours that support Sustainable Development Goal 4 – equitable and inclusive quality education for all.
