The Duchess of Edinburgh visits Somalia
This week, the Duchess of Edinburgh completed a two-day official visit to Somalia.
On Monday, the Duchess of Edinburgh met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at Villa Somalia in Mogadishu. The meeting focused on the crucial role women play in peacebuilding, strengthening community resilience, and ensuring accountability for sexual and gender-based violence.
The Duchess of Edinburgh also met with victims of gender and sexual based violence perpetrated by al-Shabaab, reinforcing the importance of the UK-Somalia security partnership.
The Duchess of Edinburgh then visited a Somali village in Lower Shabelle to meet with the wives of Somali soldiers to hear about the dangers posed by al-Shabaab and the challenges they face.
On Tuesday, the Duchess of Edinburgh held a meeting at the British Embassy with Somali organisations and partners to discuss the challenging operating environment they face, with conflict, drought, and scarcity of resources exacerbating the prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence.
The Duchess of Edinburgh then visited a hospital in Mogadishu to learn more about a UK-funded sexual and reproductive health service programme operating across 39 health facilities in five regions of the country. The programme is run by International Rescue Committee.
