Regal Review: King Harald & Queen Sonja's 80th birthdays - Gala Dinner
In 2017, both King Harald and Queen Sonja celebrated their 80th birthdays. King Harald was born on February 21th, 1937 while Queen Sonja was born on July 4th, 1937. Instead of having two separate birthday celebrations, the royal couple decided to celebrate together on May 9th and 10th with foreign royal guests. On May 9th, King Harald and Queen Sonja hosted a glittering gala dinner at the Royal Palace.
Before the gala dinner, the Norwegian royal family and the royal guests appeared on the balcony to greet the crowd who sang Happy Birthday to their King and Queen.
Queen Sonja wore a lime green gown with a lace overlay on the top and a dropped waist. She wore pieces from the emerald parure and the Order of St Olav.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore a white gown with floral embroideries with her Kotur green clutch and nude pumps. She wore Queen Maud's Vifte Tiara for the first time in its tiara form with the Order of St Olav.
Princess Martha Louise wore a strapless blue gown with feathers from Norwegian designer Cecilie Melli with an Eliza Jane Howell belt. She wore King Olav's Gift Tiara, which was a gift for her 18th birthday, and the Order of St Olav.
Queen Maxima wore her Jan Taminiau embroidered gown. She had first worn this gown for Prinsjesdag 2015. She wore her Sapphire Parure Tiara with the matching ribbon brooch and diamond and sapphire bracelet with the sash of the Order of St Olav. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore a long pink coat by Yves Saint Laurent with a brown gown and a pink clutch. She had worn the coat and the matching pink gown for Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s wedding in 2001. She wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara with the sash of the Order of St Olav.
Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore a silver strapless gown with embellishments. She wore Grand Duchess Adelaide's Tiara with diamond and sapphire earrings and necklace as well as the Order of Adolphe of Nassau.
She wore a new Oscar de la Renta sequin embellished gown and her Sergio Rossi pumps.
Queen Silvia wore a navy long sleeve gown with a matching navy clutch and pieces from the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure with the Order of St Olav.
Crown Princess Victoria wore her Elie Saab off the shoulder couture gown with her matching Yves Saint Laurent clutch. She wore her Baden Fringe tiara with diamond epaulettes earrings and the Order of St Olav.
Queen Margrethe wore her teal lace column gown with her Floral Aigrette tiara and diamond jewelry as well as the Order of St Olav.
Crown Princess Mary wore a new Max Mara jacquard gown with her Manolo Blahnik gold pumps and a Prada pink clutch. Outside, she wore her Heartmade white embroidered cape. She wore her Edwardian tiara and the matching earrings and the sash of the Order of St Olav.
Crown Princess Marie-Chantal wore a white Valentino printed brocade gown with her Calvin Klein metallic box clutch. She wore her diamond fringe tiara with the sash of the Order of Saints Olga and Sophia.
Princess Tatiana wore a Celia Kritharioti green long sleeve gown with an off the shoulder detail and a silver beaded Giorgio Armani clutch. She wore the Antique Corsage Tiara with the Order of Saints Olga and Sophia.
Princess Sofia wore her Oscar de la Renta silk floral ball gown with her navy Christian Louboutin clutch. She wore the Six Buttons Tiara with the Order of the Seraphim.
The Countess of Wessex wore a green Suzannah sleeveless gown with her Kurt Geiger pumps. On the balcony, she wore her Zara faux fur jacket. She wore her diamond and aquamarine tiara with a matching tiara and the sash of the Royal Victorian Order.
Princess Mabel wore her Viktor & Rolf bow silk satin gown with matching nude accessories. She wore the Pearl Button Tiara with pearl earrings.
