Crown Princess Victoria attends UN's Maritime Conference

On Tuesday, 28 June, Crown Princess Victoria attended the UN's Maritime Conference in Lisbon, Portugal.

This conference is a follow-up to the World Ocean Conference 2017, of which Sweden and Fiji were the initiators. The focus of the Maritime Conference is to look at solutions for sustainable management of the world's oceans. The conference also highlights the threats to marine health, ecology, the economy, and management. The threats are, for example, acidification, littering, pollution, illegal and unregulated fishing, as well as the loss of habitats and biodiversity. This year's maritime conference is co-organized by Kenya and Portugal.

The Crown Princess began her day by attending a side event focusing on how the financing of fishing can be directed towards a so-called blue economy by creating conditions for profitable offshore investments.

Afterward, the Crown Princess took part in the side event Joining the dots between sustainable maritime logistics and planetary boundaries, where Minister for Development Aid Matilda Ernkrans gave an introductory speech. At the side event, Sweden and Finland showed how the countries are at the forefront when it comes to the development of sustainable shipping solutions.

At the end of the morning, Crown Princess Victoria listened to a dialogue on how to strengthen sustainable maritime economies, especially developing countries on small islands.

After lunch, Crown Princess Victoria and Minister for Development Aid Matilda Ernkrans visited the organization Keep Sweden Clean’s stand and were presented with the digital game "No time to waste - escape the plastic pollution".

Afterward, Crown Princess Victoria and the Minister for Development Aid met with Sylvia Earle, president and chairman of Mission Blue / The Sylvia Earle Alliance, for a conversation about the oceans and the research that Sylvia Earle conducted.

The day ended with the Crown Princess and the Minister for Development Aid attending Ambassador Helena Pilsa's reception at the Swedish residence in Lisbon.
