Queen Maxima makes official visit to the USA as UNSGSA - Day 1
On Wednesday, Queen Maxima started an official visit to Washington DC and New York City in her role as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Inclusion for Development. She spent her first day in Washington D.C.
Queen Maxima first met with the US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to discuss financial health and resilience.
She then held a meeting with the U.S. Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael J. Hsu focused on economic recovery, creating resilience to shocks, and digital assets for inclusion & protection.
Afterward, Queen Maxima met with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgiev to talk about their respective initiatives for financial inclusion and future collaborations.
Other meetings included talks with World Bank Managing Director of Development Policy & Partnerships Mari Pangestu, Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP) CEO Sophie Sirtaine, and Center for Financial Inclusion Managing Director Mayada El-Zoghbi.
These meetings all focused on future collaboration to ensure that inclusive finance leads to positive outcomes, especially in such difficult times.
Queen Maxima’s message during this day of meetings with different stakeholders was the importance of inclusive finance, particularly during COVID-19 recovery efforts, as well as the importance of building resilience to future shocks from economic and climate events.
